French
hotel chain, Accor, has found themselves at the centre of the latest
demolition scandal to divide Muscovites. On 24th and 25th July,
bulldozers destroyed an the Alexeev Mansion, an early 19th century
classical ensemble on Bakhrushina Street in south Moscow, near the
Tretyakov Gallery. Part of the complex is within a conservation zone.
Tens of protestors formed a ring around the building, but workmen
broke through and completed the demolition.

Archnadzor and MAPS call on Moscow lovers to go down to Church of the Resurrection in Kadashi and help stop the continuing illegal demolition of historical buildings on the territory of the church.The construction of the Five Capitals apartment complex poses a danger to the foundation of the church.
Last week, builders began dismantling the Chamber of Olenevy, on Kadashevsky pereulok, which is part of the architectural ensemble that included the church, and a nearby confectionery plant from the late 19th century.
Protesters managed to stop further demolition Monday but it resumed
Tuesday.
Demolition at the site was suspended late last year following a public uproar after builders dismantled the Deacon’s House, which was given to the church at the end of the 1800s.

Russian President Dmitry
Medvedev has released a resolution that the Melnikov House in central
Moscow is to become a State Museum. This development is being welcomed
by conservationists who have been campaigning to safeguard the future of
the house built by Avant-garde architect Konstantin Melnikov in
1927-1929. The resolution comes over four years after the death of
Viktor Melnikov, the son of the architect, who stipulated in his will
that the house should become a state museum. The resolution was seen in
court on thursday 20th May by Yekaterina Karinskaya, granddaughter of
the architect, and executor of her father’s will. It
is hoped that it marks a change of fortune for the embattled house.
